The Gold Award Team “Bidirectional Air Circulation Filter Fan” was formed by HKUST students from the School of Engineering and School of Science.

The Gold Award Team “Bidirectional Air Circulation Filter Fan”, was formed by HKUST students from the School of Engineering and School of Science, has developed a bidirectional fan to improve the indoor air circulation of the households living in subdivided units with windows.

Project Lead On Kin Sum(SENG) said the solution was inspired by the real-life experience of the team. All five of them had lived in subdivided units and deeply understood the importance of air circulation to the households. Although they designed different solutions, they finally chose the most feasible one. He added that the next step is to improve the design and make a prototype. He will consider applying for Dream Builder Program as a seed fund for future development.

“Some solutions are innovative and practical that address the unmet needs in the housing issues in Hong Kong. Love to see these solutions to be implemented into the subdivided and cage home in the nearest future.” said Carrie Ling, Co-organizer of the Competition and Director of HKUST Entrepreneurship Center.

She added that she believes that the partnership with SOW Asia will nurture HKUST students with both the entrepreneurial mindset and social responsibility to become global citizens who create responsible innovation for addressing different unmet needs in their lives.

Social Good Entrepreneurship Case Competition aims to find short-term solutions that could address the housing issues faced by those living in subdivided flats and cage homes. HKUST Entrepreneurship Center thought exorbitant property prices, high rentals, and the proliferation of subdivided flats all remind the participants that we must tackle the housing problem with an entrepreneurial mind.
