Prof. Berthold JAECK
Assistant Professor of Physics, Department of Physics, HKUST
Founder and Scientific Advisor of Quano Technologies Ltd.
Dr. Berthold Jaeck is a Professor of Physics at HKUST and an expert in quantum materials and microscopy. He established a research lab at HKUST in Hong Kong, where he encountered challenges with existing positioning technology based on piezoelectric actuators. To address this, he redesigned nano positioning technology from scratch, resulting in next-generation devices that offer superior mechanical stability, reliable operation under extreme and dynamically varying environmental parameters, and a unique heat load management and thermalisation scheme. After filing for patent protection in the USA and China, he founded Quano Technologies Limited with his wife, Silvia Jaeck, to share this superior technology with others.
Company Description
Quano Technologies Ltd. innovates, manufactures, and sells next generation nano positioning devices for technically demanding applications in the high-tech industry and research sector. Today, advances in artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and space exploration rest on our ability to fabricate nanometer-sized computer chips and physical components with extreme accuracy. This makes precision positioning devices a cornerstone of today’s high-technology and manufacturing stack. Our positioning devices use piezoelectric actuation to realize millimeter to centimeter displacements with nanometer accuracy. Our shared vision is to enable our customers to succeed in their technically most demanding applications that require the use of positioning devices under adverse environmental conditions of extreme temperatures, vacuum pressures, and excessive heat load. We achieve this goal by combining innovative R&D work with precision manufacturing to realize next-generation nano positioning devices with unprecedented technical specifications.
