Prof. Jack Cheng is the Associate Head and Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Associate Director of GREAT Smart Cities Institute, and Director of BIM Lab at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He obtained his PhD degree from Stanford University. He has led a number of research projects in smart buildings and construction. He is currently the Chairperson of Committee on BIM and Construction Digitalisation, a Council Member, and a Member of Committee on Construction Safety at Construction Industry Council (CIC). He is a Past President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Greater China Section, Past Chairman of the Autodesk Industry Advisory Board (AIAB), Past Honorary Treasurer of the Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modeling (HKIBIM), and Past Director of the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC). He is a Fellow Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Civil and Building Information Management (HKICBIM), Professional Member of the HKIBIM, CIC Certified BIM Manager (CCBM), CIC Certified BIM Coordinator (CCBC), and Certified Carbon Auditor Professional. He has received the Construction Industry Outstanding Person Award in 2019, and a few research and paper awards in international conferences.

Company Description

Prof. Jack Cheng co-founded AutoSafe Limited in 2021 to promote innovations for construction site safety. AutoSafe provides smart site safety system (4S) solutions for the construction industry leveraging AI and IoT technologies. The AutoSafe team has won the champion of the 2022 HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition, and a Gold Medal at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in 2023. Prof. Cheng also co-founded the Hong Kong Red Circle Technology Co., Limited in 2022. RCT provides intelligent and automated defect inspection services based on AI and drones for civil infrastructure such as bridges. Using the services can greatly improve the accuracy of inspection while avoiding safety issues.
