Entrepreneurship Survey in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 2022

“Entrepreneurship Survey in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 2022” is conducted by the Entrepreneurship Center (EC) of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in August 2022 to all full-time students at HKUST, with 766 responses. This report was generated based on data collection in the form of an online survey by Qualtrics. The survey was conducted in six parts:

(3)Awareness and Importance of Entrepreneurship Center

(4)Satisfaction on Entrepreneurship Center

(5)Students’ Expectations

(6)Pursuing Development in the Greater Bay Area

The overall objectives of the study are to help understand students’ thoughts about HKUST entrepreneurship culture, their expectations and needs for entrepreneurship development ​and facilitate Entrepreneurship Center’s evaluation and planning​.

According to the results, 88% of the students feel proud of entrepreneurship in HKUST, and 87% agreed that HKUST plays an important role in the entrepreneurship ecosystem. For Entrepreneurship Participation, 2 in 5 students attended entrepreneurial-related activities or courses.  Compared with the participation rate of 27% in 2021, it shows that the students engaged in more entrepreneurship activities.

The students indicate how Entrepreneurship Center is important in entrepreneurship development and support in the HKUST. 87% of the students consider EC important in entrepreneurship development, and 94% think EC will be the first unit for entrepreneurship support in HKUST.

Regarding satisfaction with Entrepreneurship Center, 78% of students believe the entrepreneurship information provided by EC is comprehensive. 93% of students recommend EC to others for entrepreneurship support in HKUST. This result clearly shows how important Entrepreneurship Centre is in entrepreneurial support.

The most need for entrepreneurship in HKUST identified in the survey is financial support, with 53% (405) respondents, while business opportunity is about 48% (366) and advising service is about 36% (271) among those who responded.

 

Pursuing Development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA)

Interest is high among students to extend their development in the GBA. Around 65% of the respondents in the survey said they would work, set up or run a business, study, or buy properties in GBA cities in the mainland China. Among the respondents interested in GBA opportunities, their preferences for the development areas in descending order are career pursuit, entrepreneurship, Education and Homeownership.

Regarding HKUST’s entrepreneurship support in the GBA, 58% think HKUST provides enough entrepreneurship information in the GBA, and 87% consider HKUST will be helpful when they pursue development in the GBA.

According to the survey, 87%of respondents prefer to pursue development in Shenzhen, while 59% would like to go to Guangzhou, and 19% choose Zhuhai.
