The competition at HKUST this year attracted 117 teams – more than a 15% increase versus last year. The competition got the continual support from Title Sponsor Sino Group, together with other 14 sponsors, strategic partners, and supporting organizations.
To encourage the participation of interested parties across Hong Kong and from abroad, a Matching Platform was developed for participants to find potential partners and form teams to join the competition. 15% of teams found their members through this Platform.
A total of 24 teams had the chance to showcase their projects on the HKUST campus in April 2019 to HKUST students and the general public. Over 1100 visitors joined the exhibition and voted for their favorite teams. These 24 teams also participated in the Elevator Pitch event and the online voting session had drawn over 730 votes for the Elevator Pitch Award.
The competition received many marvelous business ideas such as the multispectrum sensors to help companies improve productivity, the disruptive method of influenza strain diagnosis and other projects in Sustainability, Social Services, I.T. & Smart Tech and Fintech areas.
After the Final Presentation on June 2019, Horizon Biochip has crowned the champion of the competition and the winner of the President Award, as well as the GF Innovation Award and the Healthcare Prize. The company’s product CryoChip automates the process of preserving embryos/oocytes in IVF medical procedure.

Quommni Technologies L.L.C., the winner of the Silver Award, developed a novel, disruptive method of influenza strain diagnosis. The point-of-care assay will yield results in 30 minutes, benefiting patients and epidemiological studies.

The top 3 teams of the competition, comprising HKUST students, alumni, and their international peers, will compete with the finalists from 7 different regions in the Grand Final in Nansha in September 2019.
