From Networking Hurdles to Innovative Solutions: Simon Sin's Journey at HKUST

The Innovation and Technology Scholarship recognizes students who possess a genuine passion for innovation, commitment to community service, and visionary goals. Constantly seeking new ways to transform the world around them, meet HKUST’s exceptional Innovation and Technology scholars.

“To be selected as a recipient is not just an honour, but a great recognition of my abilities and potential. It really motivates me to work hard and create meaningful impact to the community,” beams Simon Sin, a Global Business and Finance major.

As a business student, Simon has had his fair share of experiences networking with peers and mentor figures. Across these experiences, he has faced struggles when initiating new connections – a struggle that many can relate to. He openly admits, “I love joining events and meeting new people, but I was unsure of what to say and how to stay connected after events.”

Making light of the situation, Simon has since ideated an event management app which streamlines the networking experience and brings people together through technology. He harbors a positive outlook on his project’s potential: “The app is still in a developing stage, but hopefully it will facilitate connections, and empower individuals to build their networks effectively and comfortably.”

He attests his entrepreneurial mindset to the supportive community created by the Global Business program.  As a rising entrepreneur, he also remarks how invaluable the Entrepreneurship Center has been in expanding his network: “One of the greatest challenges for startups is finding the right individuals to join their team. However, the Entrepreneurship Center is such a great platform for connecting like-minded people.”

Having successfully participated in the esteemed Cyberport University Partnership Programme 2023 at Cambridge, he further expresses his gratitude to Entrepreneurship Centre: “The constant encouragement and the resources provided by the centre, ranging from mentorship to workshops, have contributed significantly to my development as an entrepreneur.”

As the future draws near, Simon looks forward to exploring new opportunities: “I would say the scholarship has opened doors to a network of like-minded individuals and resources. I am eager to continue pursuing innovation and technology, utilizing the knowledge and skills I have gained to drive positive change.”

As Simon diligently crafts his event networking app, his deep appreciation for connection becomes abundantly clear. In the same vein, he goes as far as to say, “The most important advice I would give to other HKUST student entrepreneurs is to focus on the people. While it may be tempting to believe that you can achieve everything on your own, building a strong support network is crucial to success.”

From networking challenges to creating an event management app, Simon Sin catalyses the change he wants to see in the world. As he brings his innovation to life, we are keeping our eyes wide open to witness what opportunities he bravely triumphs next.
