HKUST's EdTech Entrepreneur, Jason Cheung Pok To, Received "Hong Kong Top 10 Outstanding Tertiary Students" Award 2022

Jason Cheung is one of the three winners of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's "Hong Kong Top Ten Outstanding Tertiary Students" award as a student entrepreneur. Through the years of cramming education, he is determined to break the tradition of paper-based learning and founded QualiFly Education, a one-stop learning platform a year and a half ago, transforming himself from an entrepreneur to the founder of an education technology enterprise, hoping to open up a new path for education in Hong Kong.

The goal of the business: To establish intelligent education and to get rid of the dull and repeated study method

“After experiencing how it is like to prepare for public examinations in Hong Kong, we realised how ineffective the current way that most people adopts to study is. Instead of blindly drilling exercises and trying to stuff everything in our brains, students should focus on what they are actually weak at and work on exercises that suits their needs. However, students are still spending hours everyday in cramming for exams, leading to lack of free time for them to explore their interests and hobbies.”

QualiFly uses big data and artificial intelligence to reduce students' "repeated mistakes". The intelligent system will analyze students' learning records, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and provide targeted learning guidance to compensate for the shortcomings of large classroom teaching.

Jason's inspiration for starting his own business came from his elementary school classroom. He recalls that he has struggled to keep up with the class’s progress, while teachers are not able to provide enough individual support as they need to cater for a whole class of 30+ students. Students can either rely on standardised supplementary exercises after school or additional classes at tutorial centres. Not only extra time and effort is needed, students also felt very stressful after studying for long hours.

Social Entrepreneurial Values: Providing Fair, Efficient, Quality Learning Opportunities

The current spoon-fed education system cannot be totally changed over-night, but Jason believes there is a lot that can be done to improve how students learn and revise. QualiFly has already launched a series of pilot programs, working with schools and nonprofits to provide trial services to elementary school students. Jason noted that QualiFly is now focusing on R&D and user experience, collecting usage data through the pilot program before moving on to the next stage of development.

"Many newly arrived students are not proficient in English, and some are not given equal learning opportunities due to lack of family support," Jason said. Jason said QualiFly will be able to serve students from grass-roots families in the future by providing free service so that every student can have a fair chance to learn and solve the problem of unequal educational opportunities in Hong Kong.
